For those
interested in events, meetings and competitions, Alassio offers
a wide choice to suit everyone, ranging from ethnical music,
sailing, tennis, cycling and motor racing, photography and religious
devotion: amongst these, on 25th November the Confraternita
(Brotherhood) of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria still observes
the ancient custom to distribute the “figasse” (“focacce”, typical
type of salted bread) to the faithful. But the most important
event is the annual literary prize: Premio Alassio Centolibri,
“A Publisher for Europe”.
You
can enjoy many water sports such as water skiing, windsurf,
kite-surf, scuba diving etc. The shade of the pine trees is
ideal for trekking, mountain bike, the hinterland offers golf,
trekking and free -climbing
Since
30s the Café Roma, at the corner of via Cavour, is one of Alassio
most famous tourist symbols, visited by all artists and culture
and showbiz stars. About 50 years ago the owner, Mario Berrino,
got the idea to put on the walls of nearby gardens of Piazza
Libertà some pottery tiles with the names of the personalities
that visited the place. Hernest Hemingway was one of the first,
together with the quartet Cetra. The idea was accepted with
pleasure from the Authorities too... Look for your favourite
stars among well-known names such as Mina, Domenico Modugno,
Fabrizio de Andrè and many others from the culture and Showbiz.
Amusements
Alassio
offers lively night life all year round with many events. It
is a modern and romantic city and offers possibilities of holiday,
amusements and sport.
The
typically Liguria character of the civic centre of Alassio shows
itself in via XX Settembre, better known as "Budello" (Lane):
it is a long carruggio parallel to the sea, which runs close
between 1500 and 1600 houses and modern business and shops with
attractive and fashion windows; there is also a beautiful aristocratic
building “Palazzo Scofferi” with its 1500 crucifix attributed
to Gianbologna And right-angled to the Budello here the Esci,
the narrow lanes that take directly to the sea.
